One of the major attractions in Central Oregon for those who want fabulous scenery is Mt. Bachelor and the Cascades Lakes National Scenic Byway. And, if you ski, during the season, Mt. Bachelor is a very popular location.

Eighty-four miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska begins the primitive road known as The Dalton Highway, or the Haul Road. It was first called the Haul Road because almost everything supporting the oilfields of the North Slope of Alaska was transported across this road on tractor-trailer rigs. It ends 414 miles later in Deadhorse, the industrial camp at Prudhoe Bay. A primitive road from its beginning to its end, there are very few stretches of pavement. It is the farthest north road and involves risks and challenges, but at the same time gives the opportunity to traverse a remote, unpopulated part of Alaska to the very top of the continent.

First up on our Vancouver itinerary was a visit to the third largest park in North America, Stanley Park…
When the people of Vancouver British Columbia established Stanley Park in 1888, they created more than just a park. They provided a place for their citizens – and visitors – to enjoy the country right in their own city.

Think of Scottsdale on the ocean, less heat and no malls — You’ve got Cannon Beach on Oregon’s Pacific Coast.
An upscale beach community, Cannon Beach was the second resort town on Oregon’s coast. (Seaside was the first.) Art galleries, boutique shops, unique toy stores, candy makers and specialty restaurants abound.

Continuing our travels in Oregon this week…
Jutting out of the Pacific Ocean on the beach at Cannon Beach, Oregon is the monolith called Haystack Rock. Like a magnet, it attracts birds, humans and the sea creatures that use it for shelter.

Just a few miles up the coastal road from the Sea Lion Caves (see yesterday’s blog) is Heceta Head Lighthouse. It is one of nine lighthouses on Oregon’s coast that were built to warn fishermen and other mariners of the dangerous shallows ahead.

In the last of my three-part journey north of Santa Fe, I am heading up to Taos, New Mexico. After spending the morning in Bandelier National Monument and Los Alamos, I’m heading to a destination that is more known for its winter activities than summer.

In no particular order, I plan to review places I’ve been, things I’ve seen and restaurants where I’ve dined that have stuck with me – favorites. Some of the places already reviewed are favorites, but I’ll be highlighting some new places, as well as adding new details about those we’ve already shared.
First up – Ogunquit, Maine
Although I have a great fondness for many places on the East Coast of the US, I returned to Ogunquit, Maine several times. I loved the mix of sun, sand, waves, theater, seafood and a certain peaceful attitude you don’t find in every resort town.
Walking on the beach, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean was a restful, meditative experience. Choosing lobsters, then sitting down in a very easy-going way to enjoy our food was another fun experience. The arts community’s work in Ogunquit is a pleasure to see. (more…)

Oregon is a state of mind. Everywhere we went when we visited years ago, we found ourselves trying to figure out how we could live in that particular locale.
I love the ocean; my husband loves the mountains. Oregon has both ocean and mountains plus waterfalls, hiking, and scenery that truly makes you want to stay. So, Oregon has absolutely charmed us. The Convention and Visitors Bureaus would be proud of us!
