Travel in Oregon – Side trip to Florence

Besides our visit to the Sea Lion Caves (see the September 15 blog), we stopped for lunch and a little sightseeing in Florence, Oregon. On the coast just a few miles south of the Sea Lion Caves, Florence just happened to have a Mo’s Restaurant, a regional chain with a waterside restaurant. We were hungry and headed to Mo’s.

There are branches of the chain in many towns and the advertising, including giant billboards, really pays off. The restaurant was extremely busy. We waited briefly and were seated way near the back. The wait staff moves briskly and so do the prep people, who were industriously sprinkling toppings on some entrees when I passed by.

The seafood is fresh and dominates the menu, but hey, you’re near the ocean! Since the clam chowder is “world famous,” I had to try it. My clam chowder was rich and authentic with real, identifiable chunks of clams, a slight bacon-y taste and lots of potatoes.

 
In general, quantities were large. Great crispy fries, a shrimp salad sandwich and an avocado shrimp salad were all great. Before the waitress took my order for the salad, she verified that their avocados were ripe or I’d have had to choose something else.

For dessert, we splurged on a marionberry cobbler that, along with the peach cobbler, is made on the premises. The waitress confided that their other desserts are made elsewhere. The marionberry cobbler was tart, tangy, sweet and contained loads of berries and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, which complemented the cobbler’s tartness.

Next to Mo’s was another restaurant that was nearly deserted. We looked at their posted specials and they were all pricey.

 Mo’s has gotten the market cornered.

Florence is a good place to stroll to walk off the calories you could not resist. You can tell they rely on tourism, but that’s not a bad thing. The town is quaint, clean and easily accessible.
